Family Portraits in the French Quarter

It was a warm but lovely day in New Orleans and I met up with one of my favorite families in the Bywater for their family portraits! I’ve had the pleasure of photographing this family for years now and I always look forward to their sessions, they are always up for trying anything!

This session was extra special, especially for the kiddos being that we ended the session at Cafe’ Beignet on Royal street in the French Quarter and they got to chow down on some delicious beignets, hearts were won & tummies were full! This Cafe Beignet location has to be one of my favorites to take photos in, the heart shaped white chairs, the openess of the cafe’ it almost looks as if it were picked out of a romantic movie.

So, we all know family sessions have a little bit of a stigma, right? When most families think about taking family photos whether it’s with little ones or grown siblings, they are always nervous that it will be a sh*t show lol. I’m here to tell you that it’s possible to have a good, fun & memorable experience while taking your family photos. Here’s how:

How to prepare for a fun family photo session (as stress-free as possible):

  • Make sure your little ones are well fed & had their nap before their session!
  • Bring along toys & snacks to entice them – look, we gotta do what we gotta do!
  • Come to this session knowing that there may be tantrums, frowns & tears and that’s OKAY. Little kids will be little kids, there is no reason to be embarrassed by it!
  • If you can, bring along a friend or family member who can help & assist
  • Find a photographer that is patient & that you mesh well with. This is where word of mouth or testimonials (Reviews) come in handy.
  • It’s just photos – seriously. No need to be upset that things weren’t smooth sailing. I’ve been doing this for a long time & the best sessions are always the ones where we go with the flow & just have fun with it!

The way I approach family photos may be a little different, i’m go with the flow, but i’m also prepared. I also know that kids will be kids and I love letting them do their thing and trying to match their energy. I love seeing families interact with one another, laugh and play. This is a great time to get your kids in candid moments & creating those memories to look back on when they’re older. These are precious times to cherish because they fly by so quickly.
